D14 Discovering Earth History by Time Travel

14 The Invitation

Our discovery journeys started with exposing the conventional belief in Darwinian evolutionary theory in D1, D2 and D3. D8 –Discovering Life’s Designer is based on the written testimonies of many of God’s servants given in a period of over one thousand five hundred years (spanning from circa 1500 B.C.- A.D. 90). This is substantiated in D9 - Discovery of Science and Truth in Nature and D10 –Discoveries of Nature’s Majesty that are insights on the wonders of nature from scientists that testify to the truth in the word of God.. Discovery Tour D11 is focused on evidences from nature that have now been discovered by scientific methods  together with historical specimen and exhibits to  vindicate that the earth is about 6000 years old as God revealed in the Book of Genesis.

The knowledge of all these discoveries is a primer to the revelation of the great controversy between good and evil that is of cosmic proportion. This spiritual* realm can only be discerned by faith because spiritual things are spiritually discerned. They are foolishness to the natural man (1 Cor 2:14). D14- Discovering Earth History by Time Travel involves travelling through time in order to understand the mysteries of our sojourn on this earth. It enables us to have an insight of events in the past that are lessons for the preparation to arrive at our destiny of living in a new earth that is void of sin, of suffering and death when we are fully restored into the perfect nature by having the faith of Jesus.

(*Note: God asks Moses to write the book of Job at the beginning of the writing of inspired Scripture to tell Moses and in turn for all generations to come that this world is a theatre and a lesson book on the great controversy or cosmic conflict brought out in the first chapters of Genesis and in the first two chapters of Job. God is under trial and the people made in his image have been deceived by Satan, the accuser, who charges that God is arbitrary, selfish and vindictive and that God’s law could not be obeyed. The Book of Job tells us that God is real and He will be vindicated through, Job, a foreshadow of Jesus Christ who will defeat Satan at the cross and raise up His remnant church that will overcome the tribulation in the time of trouble to vindicate that the law of god is obeyed out of the service of love to God and not by self-interest..

14.1.1 Discovery D14 Overview

1. All of us are involved in a Star Wars spectacular. The reality of this cosmic conspiracy is found most complete in the Bible in the book, Revelation, Chapter 12. The great cosmic battle between good and evil is portrayed in one of the visions given to John when he was an exile on the island of Patmos. This war involves Jesus, God who came to dwell with humanity, His Church referring y to Christ’s followers defending against the attacker Satan , the prince of darkness who is deceiving the whole world. We are to put on the whole armour of God because all of us are involved in Star Wars, the battles with the forces of evil as Paul has described (Eph 6:11-13).

2. Satan as Lucifer, the angel of light, conceived the rebellion in heaven. He and the angels he deceived were cast out of heaven. They finally came to this earth, a new planet that was created as a theatre for the whole universe as God’s solution to the sin problem, to witness  the work of Satan being manifested  to be justifiably finally destroyed with sin never to occur again. God the Creator of this world and all that is in it, is a God of love, but which Satan perverted to be a stern and punitive God requiring appeasement. The leader of evil is motivated by an intense hatred of God and everything that belongs to God and that includes all of humankind. He came to Adam and Eve in a beautiful garden and began the deceptions that have led to the condition of the world that we see today. The theme of the great controversy is being played before our eyes every day in the newspapers, magazines, TV and social media entertainment.  

3. God gave Ellen White 2000 visions enabling her to travel through time to see the complete history of this world. In the 1858 vision of two hours she was able to see in one vision the highlights of the whole of the story of the plan of salvation for a lost world. She was taken back to heaven where she saw the issues that John describes in Rev 12. Then she saw the creation of the world and this appeared before her mind as a panoramic film, a 3-D film going before her mind, almost a replay of the circumstances that she is describing. She saw Adam and Eve as they left the Garden carried quickly through Old Testament time down to the birth of Jesus. She witnessed His life, His death, His resurrection, His ascension to Heaven. She saw the beginning of the Christian church, the infiltration false teachings, the rise of the great medieval church, the reformation and carried down to her time. She traveled into the future seeing events that would lead up to the glorious return of Jesus. She witnessed the thousand years that followed and the creation of a new world.

4. For the 1858 vision she was told to write out in a little book what she had just seen even facing Satan strong efforts to stop her. She suffered a stroke on her way home and was laid in bed on arriving home. She was given a very brief vision, where she was shown that the attack she had suffered in Jackson was Satan himself trying to kill her to prevent the story from ever telling, the story of the great controversy between him and Jesus. The little book, Spiritual Gift, Vol 1, of 219 pages was published in September, 1858. This book was retitled the Great Controversy in 1888  (with the third and final revision  published in 1911) )when she was in Europe where the Lord directed her to read from the great historians and incorporate them into the story (in which people accused her of plagiarism).

5. Between 1858 and 1864, Ellen White wrote several more volumes to complete a series called Spiritual Gifts Vol 1-4.  In Vol 1, 3 & 4 she began to expand the story in this little book Vol 1. But further vision were given to her after 1864 and from 1864 on for  the rest of her life the Lord was going to fill out the story so that the world could hear and the church  could hear the story of this great controversy. “Patriarchs and Prophets” covers the first half of the Old Testament in this conflict series. This book outlines the story of this great controversy in its origins, traces it through the lives of the patriarchs and the prophets. “The Desire of Ages” the greatest book of her life was written in 1898 in Australia. This book tells of God’s love for sinners and describing the cross. in a vision the events of Calvary and what followed passed her mind point by point. She is witnessing the terrible events when the Son of God Himself was crucified.” The Acts of the Apostles” completed the coverage on the New Testament. The last gap in the great controversy was on the second half of the Old Testament which she then wrote that book as her life ebbs away in 1915. The book “ Prophets and Kings” was published   two years later in 1917. Her lifework was done. She had finished the task of presenting to the world the Great drama of the ages, this cosmic conspiracy, this Star Wars spectacular, showing the final and wonderful triumph of good and God over evil.  It is the revelation of God’s unfathomable love and grace for sinners.

6. The world is asleep not aware of the tremendous things that lie just ahead of us before Jesus comes. The reason “The Great Controversy” was written  “to make known to others that which has thus been revealed--to trace the history of the controversy in past ages, and especially so to present it as to shed a light on the fast-approaching struggle of the future.” “In the great final conflict, Satan will employ the same policy, manifest the same spirit, and work for the same end as in all preceding ages. That which has been, will be, except that the coming struggle will be marked with a terrible intensity such as the world has never witnessed. Satan's deceptions will be more subtle, his assaults more determined in the last days.

7. None are in greater danger from the influence of evil spirits than those who deny the existence and agency of the devil and his angels. .. This is why, as we approach the close of time, when Satan is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, he spreads everywhere the belief that he does not exist. It is his policy to conceal himself and his manner of working. Satan well knows that all whom he can lead to neglect prayer and the searching of the Scriptures, will be overcome by his attacks (If what we spend time on (social media devices, especially I-phone) to keep us busy to the neglect of prayer and Bible study and thus he is succeeding.) He is attending all church services but hidden from sight, working with all diligence to control the minds of the worshipers. He is ever seeking to reach our minds and divert us from the good news about Jesus.

8. Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard. He will favor and prosper some in order to further his own designs, and he will bring trouble upon others and lead men to believe that it is God who is afflicting them. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power.( Scientist are talking about global warming. Doubtless this is a factor, but this is pulling aside the curtain and we seeing beyond apparently human events. ) Natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity all over the world as Ellen White foretold. These events are leading up to what Ellen White wrote in these amazing words which are yet to be fulfilled, “And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that has provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God's commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday sabbath; that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced; “{GC 590.1} 

9. The secular world without God are steeped in the worldview that we evolve from nothing to be better and better over time. The scenes that the Bible chronicled teach us otherwise. Paul tells us of the depraved human condition in the first century.  At the turn of the twentieth century, people lived with the idea that humanity was improving, that morality would increase, and that sci­ence and technology would help usher in a utopia. The picture in the first century is no different in our time. In many cases it has become worse and worse left to our human condition. (The Roman Empire over time destroyed itself from the inside out (the same for Babylon, Persia and Greece). Left to ourselves that’s what we will do to each other).

10. The Bible provides history as well as prophecy saying that Babylon (spiritual) is coming and we must warn people (Rev 14:8).  We must first identify who Babylon is in order to warn people who to avoid based on what we believed. (Rev 17:5,6 : Babylon ( woman =church (Eph 5:23; Isa 51:6) is the mother of all churches as the  claim  of the Roman Catholic Church, which has persecuted for ages God’s faithful. The crisis that Babylon is coming is going to affect the whole world. Rev 13: 1-10)- The first beast (blasphemous, claiming power  to forgive sins and also claiming to be God- Jn 10:30-33- i.e. papacy is coming and even is going to enforce a National Sunday law. We are to preach this message so that other can be aware of this crisis that is soon to break upon the whole world.  This is the repeat of Jeremiah experience of persecution for preaching that Babylon was coming to conquer Jerusalem. The people listened to false prophets instead.  So the application for us today as God is raising up true messengers to give His message that Babylon is coming to be aware of the coming crisis  that the papacy is going to work through the United States of America to enforce a national Sunday law.  There will be pastors , elders , church members who are counteracting the work of God’s true messengers.  They are preaching lies to deceive the people. It took place in Jeremiahs time ( 20:7)  and so it will take place in our time.

11. As we are seeing false messengers preaching a message of peace and safety we know that destruction is at the doors. As it was then so it is today because the sad reality is the majority do not wake up until it is too late-.Jer 28:1 tells us they were still sitting under these apostate leaders. The good ending is that Jesus said “When you shall see all these things, look up because your redemption is drawing nigh.”  Therefore when we see all these things drawing near, Jesus is coming. For those whose faith are beginning to wane a little, you are reminded  of the great prophecies that Jesus made that we are seeing so dramatically fulfilled before our eyes today.  One day the great controversy will be ended. Death and pain and suffering will be all in the past. Then we shall walk with Him through the new earth and what a wonderful day that will be. But until then we must make sure of our eternal destiny. We must share the assurance that we have in Christ before this time of trouble is about to come upon the world.

14.2 The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

Back in 1977, the first of eventually six movies was released.  The latest in the series was in 2005 and this series- “Star Wars” has become one of the greatest box-office hits in the history of movie making.  Many people have made Star Wars into a religion which George Lucas, billionaire author and director of Star Wars, commented saying it’s only a movie.  This fiction of imagination may touch on the reality of the war between good and evil where we are preoccupied every one of us in a cosmic star war in the spiritual (invisible)realm, that makes Darth Vader just look like a boy scout.  All of us are involved in a Star Wars spectacular; all of us are involved in unfolding a cosmic conspiracy of awesome proportions. This is based on Scripture in the inspired writing of Paul, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. “ Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. “ Eph 6:11-13. Here Paul counsels  that touches on the life of everyone in this world. We are to put on the whole armour of God because all of us are involved in Star Wars, the   battles with the forces of evil as Paul has described.

14.2.1 Bible Prophecy on the Great Controversy

The reality of this cosmic conspiracy is found most complete in the Bible in the book, Revelation  Chapter 12: “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: “And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. ”And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. “  And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.” And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. “-Rev 12:1-5. This is the great cosmic battle between good and evil portrayed in one of the visions given the John when he was exiled to on the island of Patmos.

The three entities are the woman, the dragon and the male child. Their Identities are :  1. The dragon is clearly identified as Satan who is deceiving the whole world: “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”- Rev 12:9. 2. The male child is very clearly Jesus who  is the only boy ever born into this world whose destiny was to rule all the nations “with a rod of iron”( Psa 2:9), and who was caught up to God and is seated at “the right hand of the throne of God.”  (Heb 12:2). 3. The woman represents the Church (God’s true people); the symbol God uses  of a woman married to Jesus  in the relationship of marriage symbolizing the relationship  that should exist between His church on earth and Jesus. However there is another woman in Revelation chapter 17 “arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:”( Rev 17:4) (and described as a harlot v.5) who stands in great contrast to this one that is clothed with heavenly symbol. 

14.2.1.1 Satan’s First Attempt to Kill Jesus

Satan was waiting to assault as soon as Jesus was born  (Matt 2:4).  History confirms that King Herod  ordered the murder of all baby boys under two years of age in Bethlehem- Matt 2:16). The inspired account in Revelation pulls aside the curtain to enable us to see behind political events on earth the great controversy between Christ and Satan.  In this particular event, the devil knows who this baby boy is and he is determined to stop Him from ever going to the cross because he knows from Genesis 3:15 that when that baby boy comes He will finally bruise Satan’s head as foretold.

The significant thing about this chapter (which we don’t know about without spiritual discernment) is that Satan had met Jesus before  in heaven where “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, “And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. “ And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”- Rev 12:7-9. The Bible refers to Michael as being the Archangel, leader of the angels, or chief of the angels.  Jesus was known as Michael before He came to this world to be our Saviour. Jesus was the one who cast the dragon (originally Lucifer, the angel closest to God, who caused the rebellion in heaven) out of heaven, but at the time of the birth in the mystery of the incarnation when Michael became a helpless baby in a manger and Lucifer is there knowing the reason why Jesus came.  This brings to view this great controversy that this planet is involved in a war of cosmic proportion. The leader of evil is motivated by an intense hatred of God and everything that belongs to God d and that includes all of humankind. The theme of the great controversy is being played before our eyes every day in the newspapers, magazines, TV  and social media entertainment. We see it in the streets of our cities, in or newspapers, in our churches, in our national councils, Courts of Justice, and in our own hearts. We see the evidence of it in the ruin of souls and bodies of men, women and children through drugs and alcohol. We see it in the breakup of families in the strife and the murder, the event of September 11, 2001and the terrorism that is striking the earth today and the increasing natural disasters.

God the Creator of this world and all that is in it, is a God of love, but which Satan perverted to be a stern and punitive God requiring appeasement. He has promised that “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”- Amo 3:7.  God has thus placed among us, Ellen G. White* who was endowed with prophetic gifts. In her lifetime Ellen White received some 2000 visions between the age of 17 when she received her first to1915 when she was 87 (70 years later). The most comprehensive vision was the one she received in 1858 which focuses on this great controversy between Christ and Satan, this cosmic conflict. She spent much of her time subsequently in amplifying, magnifying and applying the principles of this great controversy to the counsel she gives to us.

14.2.2 The Era before 4004 B.C.

This controversy started with this angel (Lucifer/Satan)( beginning to question not only God’s character but the law of God making charges against God and the way He governs this universe until the day came when Michael cast him and his angels out of heaven. They finally came to this earth, a new planet that was created as a theatre for the whole universe as God’s solution to the sin problem, to witness  the work of Satan being manifested  to be justifiably finally destroyed with sin never to occur again. He came to Adam and Eve in a beautiful garden and began the deceptions that have led to the condition of the world that we see today.

14.2.2.1 The Vision of 1858

March 14, 1858, a Sunday afternoon in Bowling Green (a town south of the city of Toledo), Ohio. Ellen White was in Bowling Green (then called Lovett’s Grove) conducting some meetings during the week with her husband. Then somebody had died in the Bowling Green community and they asked James White to conduct the funeral service at a little schoolhouse. It was full and people were around outside looking through the two windows and never expecting to see what they saw.  James White  begins to comforts the mourners talking about the soon coming of Jesus, the resurrection  of the righteous dead and the hope that we have He turned to his wife who was then 30 years old and ask if she would like to speak to the mourners as well. She came forward and also spoke of the second coming of Christ and that this man would live again. As she was talking the people present began to notice she was losing consciousness ( same as Daniel experienced in Dan 10), the way the Lord want to reach her mind with all her 2000 visions.  By becoming unconscious, many people noticed and they later wrote of it, she went backwards as though angels were behind her lowering her gently down. James White realized immediately what was happening and immediately stepped forward and said that his wife was in vision and she would tell them the vision when she regained consciousness.  The funeral service stopped for two hours and the people testified that there was no fear only a deep sense of the presence of God and they waited for two hours.

14.2.2.1.1 Time Travel in Ellen White’s Vision

In her vision, she saw some things concerning the local church but the most important part of the vision was a panoramic presentation of the whole of the conflict of the ages, conflict between the war in heaven and the creation of the new earth. Never again was she able to see in one vision the highlights of the whole of the story of the plan of salvation for a lost world. She was taken back to heaven where she saw the issues that John describes in Rev 12. Then she saw the creation of the world and this appeared before her mind as a panoramic film, a 3-D film going before her mind, almost a replay of the circumstances that she is describing. She saw Adam and Eve. She says a look of terrible sadness   come over the face of Adam and Eve as they left the Garden carried quickly through Old Testament time down to the birth of Jesus. She saw His birth in the stable, witnessed His life, His death, His resurrection, His ascension to Heaven. She saw the beginning of the Christian church. Then she saw how doctrines and teachings would come to the church that the early apostles never knew and she witnessed the rise of the great medieval church. She was carried down to the time of the Reformation. She saw Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to the church door at Wittenberg. She saw some of the work of the other reformers carried down to her own time and then forward seeing events that would lead up to the glorious return of Jesus. She witnessed the thousand years that followed and the creation of a new world. As the vision ended the angel standing by her side told her she must write out in a little book what she had just seen. But she wrote in her diary that she would have to “contend with the powers of darkness for Stan would make strong efforts to stop her from writing that book” She was also assured that “the angels of God will not leave you in the conflict but you must put your trust in God.”  Imagine the comfort and joys that must have come to her heart and to the listeners hearts as she recounted the story of the resurrection, the joy  on the faces of the people as they were reunited with loved ones. Many wanted to know more rather than follow the casket to the grave.

Two days later on the Tuesday on her way by train back to her home in Battle Creek, Michigan, she and her husband in talking about their experience decided that they would call into the little town of Jackson and there meet with two very close friends. Dan Palmer, a blacksmith, and his wife Abigail, were the very first convert to the Adventist Church by Joseph Bates.  They were not long in their home  when she later wrote “My tongue suddenly refused to utter what I wished to say and seemed large and numb, a strange cold sensation struck my heart, passed over my head and down my right side. I tried to use my left arm and limb and they were perfectly useless for a short time. I did not expect to live.” Immediately, James, Dan and his wife knelt around Ellen White now on the ground suffering from a stroke and they prayed.  She was sufficiently strengthened for her to be bodily carried down to the train station in Jackson for the 80 km track home.  

Back in Battle Creek, their first home, she was laid in bed and she remembered what the angels had said that she must write out in a little book what she had seen in vision. She wrote one page and then had to rest for three days to have her health and strength restored.  Three months later in June, 1858, one of the church members, Mrs. Hutchins was dying and she asked for Ellen White to come and pray for her. She was sufficiently strengthened to be able to walk over, prayed   and Mrs. Hutchins was healed.  She was given a very brief vision, where she was shown that the attack she had suffered in Jackson was Satan himself trying to kill her to prevent the story from ever telling, the story of the great controversy between him and Jesus. In that two hour vision she had also seen the temptations and the methods of deception that Satan would use to divert the human race from Jesus.

Three months later in September,1858 the little book, Spiritual Gift, Vol 1,  of 219 pages was published.  She wrote in the first page: “The Lord has shown me that Satan was once an honored angel in heaven, next to Jesus Christ. His countenance was mild, expressive of happiness like the other angels. His forehead was high and broad, and showed great intelligence. His form was perfect. He had a noble, majestic bearing. The Lord has shown me that Satan was once an honored angel in heaven, next to Jesus Christ. His countenance was mild, expressive of happiness like the other angels. His forehead was high and broad, and showed great intelligence. His form was perfect. He had a noble, majestic bearing. I was then shown Satan as he was a happy exalted angel then I was shown him as he now is He still bear a kingly form. His features are still noble for he is an angel fallen. But the expression of his countenance is full of anxiety, care, unhappiness, malice, hate, mischief, deceit and every evil. That brow which was once  was so noble I particularly notice his forehead commenced from his eyes to recede backwards. I saw that he demeaned himself for so long that every good quality was debased and every evil trait was developed. His eyes were cunning, sly and showed great penetration. His frame was large but the flesh hung loosely about his hands and his face. As I beheld him his chin was resting on his left hand. He appeared to be in deep thought. “ 

14.2.2.1.1.1 Documentation of Ellen White’s Visions (Time Travels)

But further vision were given to her after 1864 and from 1864 on for  the rest of her life the Lord was going to fill out the story so that the world could hear and the church  could hear the story of this great controversy. In the late 1860’s she planned a new series, called Spirit of Prophecy Vol 1-4 totaling 1700 pages that God was revealing to her. Vol 1-3 deals with the Bible period. Vol 4 covers from the first century on to the new earth. While preparing the manuscript for Vol 4 many scenes were repeated to her in vision over and over again. For example, today we know that he second coming in all of its glory was shown to her in three separate occasions. On two of those occasions  when she was staying in her home in Heidelberg in California and in Santa Lina in California during the night people sleeping in rooms in her house were awakened hearing her cry out, They come, they come.” Next morning at breakfast they asked her and she said, ”Oh yes. I saw the second coming of Christ in in all of its glory.”

In her letter to Uriel Smith in 1884 she wrote, “ I write from 15 to 20 pages every day. It is now 11 o’clock and I have written 14 pages of manuscript for Vol 4. As I write I feel intensely moved. I’ve been unable to sleep at night for thinking of the important things to take place. Great things are before us and we want to call the people from their indifference to get ready for that great day. Things that are eternal crowd upon my vision day and night. The things that are temporal fade from my sight.”

From these visions that the Lord was giving her she knew that greatly solemn events laid just ahead, but that Satan was going to work with increasing intensity to deceive and to destroy the human race.

14.2.2.1.1.2 Confirmation of Visions in Europe

She went to live in Europe between 1885 and 18887. While in Europe more vision were given to her to fill out the story. She began to read some of the great histories of the Reformation (D. Aubigne, J. Wley) and to visit the places she had seen in the vision (confirming the visions of 1858 were not all symbolic but a replay of actual events). For example, she visited the Great Grossmunster Cathedral in Zurich, Switzerland. She told her son, Willy White, how thoroughly her mind was aroused by seeing the old cathedral and the marketplace and she spoke of them in the days of Zwingli. She recognized the pulpit and seeing Zwingli, the great Swiss reformer, preaching there inside the church.

She visited the beautiful valleys in Northwestern Italy, the Waldensian Valleys. The one cave in the valleys she visited and spoke to the Waldensian people that were with her about the scenes  that had happened in that cave and their response  was nothing as you have described  for we know our history.  However, when they later searched the library they found on records exactly what she described had really taken place. She had seen so much of the wonderful witness of these people to the gospel at times when it was a time of great spiritual darkness.

14.2.2.2 The Great Controversy Story

It was in Europe that she related the Great Controversy story again. The Lord directed her to read from the great historians and incorporate them into the story (in which people accused her of plagiarism) Back in America in 1888 she brought out the first revision in “The Great Controversy.” She wrote this in 1888 to a friend, “Scenes of such thrilling solemn interest have passed before me  as no language is adequate to describe it. It was all a living reality to me.”

Later in 1911 when she was preparing the third and final revision she wrote, “ While writing the manuscript of The Great Controversy I was often conscious of the presence of the angels of God. Many times the scenes about which I was writing were presented to me anew in visions of the night so that they were fresh and vivid in my mind.

Ellen White strongly urged that this book, “The Great Controversy” must be distributed like the leaves of Autumn and be available in every home that people will be reminded of the truth written in it when National Sunday is enforced and god’s people proclaiming the final warning to not receive the mark of the beast are being thrown into prison or martyred in the cause for Christ.

14.2.2.2.1 The Fulfillment of Prophecies

Great Controversy, Chapter 25, is on the role of the United States in world affairs. Do you see what had happened in the last few years was foretold?  Chapter 34, “Can the Dead Speak to Us” to address the superstition surrounding scenes of the appearance of the Virgin Mary in many countries of the world. Chapter 35 is about the aims of the Church of Rome.  Chapter 27 covers modern revival and how to tell if they are true or false (like what the Pope is now doing in gathering all religion and faith into the one world religion.) “God’s people Delivered” in Chapter 40 on the wonderful final deliverance that’s going to come to the people of God.

She thought a great deal about this book for she wrote, “I am more anxious to see a wide circulation for this book than for any other I have written. “ It was this statement that has motivated SDA General Conference to urging Adventists around the world to distribute this book because it contains so much of the last message of warning to go to the world. “The Book, “The Great Controversy”  I appreciate above silver or gold and I greatly desire that it shall come before the people. In the Great Controversy, the last message of warning to the world is given more distinctly than in any of my other books.”- a book of increasing urgency.  (There are two other books that are also recommended, “The Desir of Ages” on the life of Jesus, and the little book, Steps, to Christ.”)

In the introduction to the Great Controversy she wrote: “In the great final conflict, Satan will employ the same policy, manifest the same spirit, and work for the same end as in all preceding ages. That which has been, will be, except that the coming struggle will be marked with a terrible intensity such as the world has never witnessed (It starts out in crisis the history of the last 2,000 years in its high points.). Satan's deceptions will be more subtle, his assaults more determined. If it were possible, he would lead astray the elect. Mark 13:22, R.V.”  {GC xi.1} (The world is asleep not aware of the tremendous things that lie just ahead of us before Jesus comes.)

“As the Spirit of God has opened to my mind the great truths of His word, and the scenes of the past and the future, I have been bidden to make known to others that which has thus been revealed--to trace the history of the controversy in past ages, and especially so to present it as to shed a light on the fast-approaching struggle of the future.”..- that‘s the reason the book was written {GC xi.2} 

14.2.2.2.2 The Beginning of Great Controversy

Two years later, she turned her attention to the first half of the Old Testament in this conflict series presenting “Patriarchs and Prophets” in the light of this great controversy even in the story of Cain and Abel. In that book she started with the chapter “Why sin was permitted,” answering so many questions that we want to know: Why does a loving God allowing suffering? Why is there pain? Why doesn’t a God who is omnipotent come in and stop all the pain in the world? This book outlines the story of this great controversy in its origins, traces it through the lives of the patriarchs and the prophets.

14.2.2.2.3 The Life Time of Christ- The Desire of Ages

In 1891, Ellen White went to Australia for nine years. She wrote the greatest book of her life there, “The Desire of Ages”. This was about the life of the Saviour for the world. She says in a letter to a friend in 1892, “I lay awake at nights trembling for fear lest I belittle the plan of salvation by cheap words.  In the very beginning in the first chapter she wrote “To know God is to love Him.” That is the kind of God Jesus came to us to reveal. This book tells of God’s love for sinners and describing the cross.  In a little letter she wrote in 1889 that in a vision the events of Calvary and what followed passed her mind point by point. She is witnessing the terrible events when the Son of God Himself was crucified.

14.2.2.2.4 The Remainder of Earth’s History- Acts of the Apostle, Prophets and Kings

She returned back to the United States in 1990 and in 11 years, she produced the book in the New Testament, The Acts of the Apostles”.  The last gap in the great controversy was on the second half of the Old Testament which she then wrote that book as her life ebbs away in 1915. The book “ Prophets and Kings” was published   two years later in 1917.Her lifework was done. She had finished the task of presenting to the world the Great drama of the ages, this cosmic conspiracy, this Star Wars spectacular, showing the final and wonderful triumph of good and God over evil.  It is the revelation of God’s unfathomable love and grace for sinners.

Notice “God is Love “is the first three words in Patriarchs and Prophets ( Vol 1 of the Conflict series). The last page in the last book, Great Controversy  where she described the wonderful rewards of God’s people and how we will visit the other planets  and tell them the wonderful story of God’s grace . Then she brings tat great book to a close with the last three words: “God is Love.”  From the beginning to the end we have the love of God because that’s what the story is. It is the story of the love of God for a perishing world and all that God did in giving of His Son. All the terrible abuse He suffered on the cross that we might have the hope of eternal life.

Throughout our human history, Satan has been working, we are told in Rev 12, to deceive the human race into seeing God as a tyrant, But That’s why Jesus came to the world to show the world what God was really like, to know God is to love Him and that is the last message of mercy to go to the world is going to be a revelation of God’s character of love. This is our task and the Bible makes it clear we are all engaged in this intense conflict, this warfare and this series, “The Conflict of the Ages,” makes it more real as we think of the intensity of this battle.

14.2.2.2.5 The White Truth

Dr. John Robertson wrote a book “The White Truth” as an answer to another book “The White Lie.”  He writes this about the Conflict of the Ages” series: I have read many biographies of Jesus but none of these has ever brought me to my knees in love to Christ like the book “The Desire of Ages.” No Church history has created in me a desire to be ready for the time of trouble or the coming of the Lord like” the Great Controversy” has. No historical documents has pulled aside the curtain permitting me to see behind the scenes, activities of unseen supernatural forces impinging upon human events . Some have shown political intrigue and machination of men and nations. But nothing like the revelation of the play and counter play of good and evil forces, of Christ and Satan locked in contest for the souls of men as in “Patriarchs and Prophets” or “Prophets and Kings.”  Can anyone read the faith to death exploits in the Acts of the Apostles” and not be deeply moved to join the loyal band of God’s faithful witnesses.

14.2.2.3 The Warfare by Satan

To make the warfare more real, here are some of the insights from two chapters in the Great Controversy, “Agency of Evil Spirits”- Ch. 31 and “The Snares of Satan.”- Ch. 35.

14.2.2.3.1 Satan is Non-Existent Lie

As we near the close of time what teaching will Satan spread?

None are in greater danger from the influence of evil spirits than those who,.. , deny the existence and agency of the devil and his angels. .. This is why, as we approach the close of time, when Satan is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, he spreads everywhere the belief that he does not exist. It is his policy to conceal himself and his manner of working.  {GC 516.2} (Many people may acknowledge some form of a God up there, but not sure of what he is like. But not many people recognize the existence of the devil (other than the caricature of a figure holding a pitch fork and a spike tail) as an exceedingly brilliant angel who has had thousands of years of experience in deceiving and trapping human souls.)

In 2001, an American researcher, George Barna, carried out a survey on thousands of Bible believing American Protestants, going to church on a Sunday. The report , “Crisis in American churches, Bible knowledge at an all-time low.”   The result to the question, Do you believe in Satan? With the Protestant Christians 20% believed Satan was real; 34% for the Southern Baptists.

Today, millions around the world are dabbling in New Age and the Occult. in some places in the U.S. there are more New Age bookstore than Christian bookstore. Satanic Bible has sold 600,000 copies, heavy metal music sell, contact with the dead is increasing dramatically and people are unaware they are dealing with a mastermind who is out to destroy them.

14.2.2.3.2 The Vulnerable Human Victims

Who are those that Satan knows will be overcome by his attacks?

Satan well knows that all whom he can lead to neglect prayer and the searching of the Scriptures, will be overcome by his attacks. Therefore he invents every possible device to engross the mind.  {GC 519.2}  If what we spend time on (social media devices, especially I-phone) to keep us busy to the neglect of prayer and Bible study and he is succeeding.)

14.2.2.3.3 Satan’s Intrusion in Church

Does Satan come to Church?

With the same object he is in attendance when men assemble for the worship of God. Though hidden from sight, he is working with all diligence to control the minds of the worshipers. .. (Outwardly we are in church to worship, but it is with our minds that we worship God and not be thinking about our world cares and desires. He is busy controlling the minds, on what we think about.) As he sees the messenger of God searching the Scriptures, he takes note of the subject to be presented to the people. Then he employs all his cunning and shrewdness so to control circumstances that the message may not reach those whom he is deceiving on that very point. The one who most needs the warning will be urged into some business transaction which requires his presence, or will by some other means be prevented from hearing the words that might prove to him a savor of life unto life.  (Paul tells us “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”- Eph 6:12. He is seeking to reach our minds and divert us from the good news about Jesus.)  {GC 518.3}

14.2.2.3.4 Unleashing of Satan’s Power in Nature  

How is Satan working today?

Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard. (Biblically, Jesus said “ He that is not with me is against me” and if we are against Him, then Satan has control of us)  He will favor and prosper some in order to further his own designs, and he will bring trouble upon others and lead men to believe that it is God who is afflicting them - {GC 589.2}. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power.( Scientist are talking about global warming. Doubtless this is a factor, but this is pulling aside the curtain and we seeing beyond apparently human events. ) These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous.  (It was in 1888 that she wrote about this.  Since then in the last few years we are reading about the worst tsunami, the wort cyclone, the worst of all those natural disasters. As we think of the world today and what we are seeing in our world, these disasters had become more frequent and disastrous. ( Note: one third of all disasters since 1900 have occurred in the 1990’s. On average there have been 700 natural disasters every decade since 1900. But in the 1990’s there were 2,400. Flood affect 130 million every year, an increase of 700% compared with just 40 years ago. There has been a 600% increase in tornadoes and hurricanes compared with the 1970’s. In the 1900.s there are at least a thousand every year. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was the worst ever storm to ever hit United States in its history. It was followed by Hurricane Rita which was one of the worst USA storm seasons on record. (The cyclone Yasi is the costliest storm ever to hit Australia; The Japanese Tsunami  etc.) {GC 589.3}

Natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity all over the world as Ellen White foretold. These events are leading up to what Ellen White wrote in these amazing words which are yet to be fulfilled, “And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that has provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God's commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. 14.2.2.4 Need to Get Ready Now

Jeremiah diagnosed that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”- Jer 17:9. But the good news is “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”- Jer 17:10   

This is truth we don’t know when without spiritual discernment. Things have not changed for the secular world without God are steeped in the worldview that we evolve from nothing to be better and better over time. The scenes that the Bible chronicled teach us otherwise. Paul tells us of the depraved condition in the first century.  Our SDA  quarterly bible study guide says “At the turn of the twentieth century, people lived with the idea that humanity was improving, that morality would increase, and that sci­ence and technology would help usher in a utopia. Human beings, it was believed, were essentially on the path toward perfection. Through the right kind of education and moral training, it was thought that humans could greatly improve themselves and their societies.( All this was supposed to start happening, en masse, as we entered into the brave new world of the twentieth century.)

Unfortunately, things didn’t quite turn out that way, did they? The twentieth century was one of the most violent and barbaric in all his­tory, thanks—ironically enough—in great part to the advances of sci­ence, which made it much more possible for people to kill others on a scale that the most depraved madmen of the past could only dream about.” (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucTLLgXNnOQ  (15:45)- “Nobody in America is Talking About This... 14.2.2.4.1Depraved Human Condition

The situation in Paul’s time is described in Rom 1: 21-32 and the present condition of the world as given to Ellen White is:

“A terrible picture of the condition of the world has been presented before me (Ellen White writing in 1870). Immorality abounds everywhere. Licentiousness is the special sin of this age. Never did vice lift its deformed head with such boldness as now. The people seem to be benumbed, and the lovers of virtue and true goodness are nearly discouraged by its boldness, strength, and prevalence. The iniquity which abounds is not merely confined to the unbeliever and the scoffer. Would that this were the case, but it is not. Many men and women who pro­fess the religion of Christ are guilty. Even some who profess to be looking for His appearing are no more prepared for that event than Satan himself. They are not cleansing themselves from all pollution. They have so long served their lust that it is natural for their thoughts to be impure and their imagina­tions corrupt.”—Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 346

The picture in the first century is no different in our time. In many cases it has become worse and worse left to our human condition. (The Roman Empire over time destroyed itself from the inside out (the same for Babylon, Persia and Greece). Left to ourselves that’s what we will do to each other).  

People nowadays are also walking around approving of it by being tolerant of things that are happening as referred to in verse 32. We will destroy ourselves, just a matter of time, and Satan would love it.to happen. We need desperately someone bigger to help us. Not to be capable  to think differently is a deception.  We must realise our spiritual poverty and helplessness without God and need to save our soul from self or salvation will pass us by.  The desperate need of a savior will be impressed on anyone at the depth of the agonizing cry for help. Jesus came to this earth to save those that are lost and He will not refuse anyone who will accept Him. He came to earth to preach the everlasting gospel to arouse men to a sense of eternal realities. He taught in parables concerning mysteries which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world (Mat 13:34-35) Christ’s parables relate the natural things to explain the spiritual kingdom as links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven. Those who rejected Christ did not divinely enlightened mind with which to perceive these truth ( 1 Cor 1:17,2:14). Those who accept Christ by faith, will find him a personal Saviour. “He is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God through Him..” (Heb 7:25).Jesus is offering His righteousness. He loved us and bore all our sins and took it to the cross, “that whosoever believedth in Him should not perish, but have  eternal life.“ (Jn 3:15). Christ's followers are commissioned to proclaim the three angels’ messages as the last warning to the world before the close of the investigative judgment and after which will be the time of trouble that will culminate with the second coming of Jesus to deliver His people. They will enlist in His army, they will become His soldiers, and fight the good fight of faith.  They die to self (as He did for all humanity), daily in order to enter into the kingdom of God to live eternally with the Creator, the God who is love.

14.2.2.4.1.1 The Prophecy of Captivity by Babylon

God calls Jeremiah to do ministry (age of 20-70 years) , to be anointed a prophet, a messenger to give His message to his people of that time. He feels that he does not have the words or the capabilities but God says to be not afraid for I am with you (in Jer 1:4-9 ). Likewise God has called us, He has given us a special message, he has ordained us just as Jeremiah to give a message to the world (1Pet 2:9). The message( Jer 14,16 ) s the family of the North (Jer 1:14), Babylon ( Jer 25: 9) is coming to Jerusalem  to carry out my judgment upon Judea which was fulfilled- Babylon is going to come carry out destruction.

 This is also what SDA are able to discern that Babylon (spiritual) is coming and we must warn people (Rev 14:8).  We must first identify who Babylon is in order to warn people who to avoid  based on what we believed. (Rev 17:5,6 : Babylon ( woman =church (Eph 5:23; Isa 51:6) is the mother of all churches as the  claim  of the Roman Catholic Church, which has persecuted for ages God’s faithful). (The Bible provides history as well as prophecy)

The crisis that Babylon is coming is going to affect the whole world. Rev 13: 1-10)- The first beast ( nation – Dan 7:25,17, 23,24  practices blasphemy= one who claim to have power  to forgive sins ) Mk 2:5- 7) and also claiming to be God- Jn 10:30-33),  i.e. papacy is coming and even is going to enforce a National Sunday law. We are to preach this message so that other can be aware of this crisis that is soon to break upon the whole world.  As Jeremiah begins to preach this message  he begins to suffer persecution .Jer 20:2, and  he kept preaching even though he was persecuted ( Jer 20:7)  The first part was to warn the people , the second part  was Babylon was coming that false prophet began to arise and God tells him that he must preach against these false prophets. Jer 27: 14,15.  In spite of these the people listen to these false teachers.  So the application for us today as God is raising up true messengers to give His message that Babylon is coming to be aware of the coming crisis  that the papacy is going to work through the United States of America to enforce a national Sunday law.  There will be pastors , elders , church members who are counteracting the work of God’s true messengers.  They are preaching lies to deceive the people. It took place in Jeremiahs time (20:7)  and so it will take place in our time.

14.2.2.4.2The Working of False Prophets

How do we know?

We know because it is a twofold message that Babylon is coming and to warn the people of these false apostate lying leaders.  Hananiah was preaching a message of peace and safety (Jer 28 1-4:9)( as many preachers are preaching today that it is ok, the Sunday law is not yet come or moving its way in darkness,  that love is above the law and you don’t have to keep the law, all you need to do is love and you are accepted by God as we are under the grace and not under the law- 1 The 5: 3.  As we are seeing false messengers preaching a message of peace and safety we know that destruction is at the doors. As it was then so it is today because the sad reality is the majority do not wake up until it is too late-.Jer 28:1 tells us they were still sitting under these apostate leaders.

The Israelite were not always in the backslidden state as in the past when Israel followed after God , they were put in a land that was not sewn (Jer 2: 2) and then God will do the sowing  v21 and how did it transpired that the right seed  became a degenerate plant. This refers to the parable of the sower on God putting the Israelites in a land that was not sown and then began to sow some seeds. Christ sowsT the good seeds (wheat) that are fruitful and there are bad seeds (tares) sown by Satan. The tares (false believers) and the wheat( true believers) are to grow together until the harvest; and the harvest is after the end of probationary time, at His second coming.

14.2.2.4.3 Victory by Faith of Christ is Certain 

Jesus had on one occasion talking to His twelve disciples said “blessed are your eyes and ears for many righteous men have longed to see the thing you were seeing and have not seen them and have longed to hear the things you hear and have not heard them. ” Jesus is referring to all the prophets in the Old Testament and the way they had looked forward to His coming for the first time. The prophets then collectively spoke of over 300 prophecies about His first coming that was fulfilled. (Yet, the Jewish leaders overlooked the prophecies and crucified Him when he came.) We like the disciples are truly blessed by what we now know from the amplification in the Spirit of Prophecy. (We must watch and pray that we are ready to welcome Christ at His second coming for our deliverance.)

The good ending is that Jesus said “When you shall see all these things, look up because your redemption is drawing nigh.”  Therefore when we see all these things drawing near, Jesus is coming. For those whose faith are beginning to wane a little, you are reminded  of the great prophecies that Jesus made that we are seeing so dramatically fulfilled before our eyes today. 

One day the great controversy will be ended. Death and pain and suffering will be all in the past. Then we shall walk with Him through the new earth and what a wonderful day that will be. But until then we must make sure of our eternal destiny. We must share the assurance that we have in Christ before this time of trouble is about to come upon the world.

One thing we can be sure that each of us are caught up in this great controversy whether we like it or not. It is in this life that you and I must decide which of the two great powers is in control of our life. There is a conflict in our minds over our loyalty with Jesus who is offering a crown of life or to stay with Satan and not convinced that he is determined to destroy us.  Ellen White wrote such true and wise when she said this: To every soul who strive for perfect character this world becomes a battlefield on which is fought the great controversy between good and evil. But everyone who trusts in Christ will gain the victory.  Jesus is offering us a crown of everlasting righteousness. Satan is determined to bind us with his chains. Yon and I have the deciding vote.

“The power and malice of Satan and his host might justly alarm us were it not that we may find shelter and deliverance in the superior power of our Redeemer. .. But those who follow Christ are ever safe under His watch care. Angels that excel in strength are sent from heaven to protect them. The wicked one cannot break through the guard which God has stationed about His people. “ {GC 517.2}  

No wonder Paul wrote about putting on the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil- Eph 6:11”For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”- Eph 6:12. (We need to have on the whole armour of God , the breastplate of Christ’s righteousness, the belt of truth, the helmet of salvation, your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace  and then in your two hands the shield of faith (the only piece of armour that protects you no matter where the arrow of Satan ‘s deceptions comes from) and the sword , the word of God ( the only piece of armour which you wound and kill the enemy).  “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”- Eph 6:13.)
