Invitation
This is a sequel to D4- Beliefs Control Genes occasioned providentially to highlight the scientific research direction in the medical fields in some of their hunt for diseases such as cancer, the case for discussion, and the extent in providing a best known treatment currently made public (education) which is to accept the inevitability of fate that our genes control our biology and hence our destiny if we choose to ignore to be made less than whole. This is based on the article “Doc Talk” by Dr Chia in the Straits Times on Sep 13, 2016.
This discovery journey in seeking an answer to “Who to Believe?” may help the ladies who are contemplating preventative "risk- reducing surgery" in removing both breasts- like Angelina Jolie cited by Dr Chia as the famous champion (with plastic surgery reconstruction), including ovaries and fallopian tubes. Coincidently, for free publicity, actress Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt and the trigger was a conflict over the kids, substance abuse and anger ... TMZ has learned.-20/9/2016 (and the latest even a third woman). We need to understand her beliefs and lifestyle are Hollywood, extremely worldly and mostly not in alignment to God’s revealed standard.
Discovery D7 Overview
1. Dr Bruce H. Lipton reveals that the Human Genome Project has shattered one of Science’s fundamental core belief, the concept of genetic determinism that our genes determine the character of our lives. New research reveals that it is the character of our lives that controls our genes. Rather than being victims of our heredity, we are actually masters of our genome.
2. We need to be taught the skill to test everything we read and to be discerning in knowing the truth from the distortion of truth. We need to practice the art of detecting bias in any writing.
3. Philosophers and wise men of the world in their study of nature have exalted and idolised it above the God of nature, while her Creator is buried up and concealed from sight by science falsely so-called.
4. The issue is on the ability to discern the truth from the subtle lie, to know who to believe based on the integration of knowing God’s Law with, evidence of science and our personal experience. The bottom line concerns the decisions we make daily on how we live our live based on our belief system, acquired rightly or wrongly. The contention in point is over the major decision of undergoing recommended surgery by Dr Chia, senior consultant and chief of the gynaecology oncology team at the division of medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore, with his convincing public disclosure in the national newspaper.
5. There should be a long term study (if none has be done) in monitoring both the people tested positive with cancer genes and their “blood-kins tested negative” to initially find out what are their differences in beliefs and in lifestyles that acts as trigger. They should be informed about the work of Dr Lipton and be allowed to decide if they are prepared to participate in following a heathy lifestyle based on the “Eight Health Laws” discussed in D6 – Best Health Plan in www.discoverylife.com This simple remedy (if it works) may be detrimental to the medical professionals (and resisted) but it is in the best interest of human dignity and public health.

“We now have evidence that those who follow such advice are actually protected against cancer. Breast cancer risk was reduced by 60% in women who met at least five recommendations compared with those who met none. The most important dietary advice was to be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight, eat mostly foods of plant origin, and limit alcoholic drinks.”- Which Dietary Factors Affect Breast Cancer Most? Video by Michael Greger M.D)
6. The work of Christ in cleansing the leper from his terrible incurable disease then is an illustration of His work in cleansing the soul from sin. The healing of the paralytic at Capernaum is to manifest His power to forgive sins that the miracle is performed. The simple faith of the paralytic accepted the words of the Master as the boon of new life. This healing also illustrates other precious truths: in giving us hope and encouragement for all believes in Him as the master healer; and a lesson of warning to people like the scribes and Pharisees. Physical disease, however malignant and deep-seated, was healed by the power of Christ; but the disease of the soul took a firmer hold upon those who closed their eyes against the light. Leprosy and palsy were not so terrible as bigotry and unbelief as manifested in the Pharisee. The two episodes of Jesus work in healing the whole person provided the spiritual significance of having the faith in the power of Christ to heal and restore to whosoever who believes in Jesus, the Son of God, should not perish but have everlasting life (Jn 3:15-21).
7. Many in these days are taking the same course as the unbelieving Jews. They witnessed the conclusive evidence that Jesus was the Promised One of Israel. But they were determined that nothing should convince them of this fact. God has given them light which they refuse to accept. His Spirit has rebuked them; but they have made his reproofs a stumbling-block in their way, over which they trip and fall. They have rejected his offered mercies; they have scorned to believe his truth, till they are left unrestrained to pursue their downward course.
8. The sanctification set forth in the Scriptures embraces the entire being,--spirit, soul, and body. Paul prayed for the Thessalonians, that their "whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are to “Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul" [1 Peter 2:11.] because our faculties are benumbed by any sinful gratification. Animal appetites and passions are indulged at the expense of health and life.
9. Believe in God who spoke through His Holy Spirit and inspired the prophets to write down His messages in the Bible. We must allow the Holy Spirit to shape our life as we open our heart to discover Jesus’ love and truth in His word. It is the privilege and the duty of every Christian to maintain a close union with Christ, and to have a rich experience in the things of God. Then his life will be fruitful in good works in a living connection with Christ to sustain us until His Second Coming.

1.0 Prologue
Cancer is a dreaded disease with no prescribed medical cure other than drastic surgery and prescription medication to slowdown the onset. It is providential that I read “Doc Talk” by Dr Chia on Sep 13, 2016, while waiting for four hours for my regular eye checkup on my glaucoma condition. The title of the article “Human destiny is in genetic make-up but we are not powerless to act”- (http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/human-destiny-is-in-genetic-make-up-but-we-are-not-powerless-to-act) is totally opposite to Discoverylifediy article D4 based on the video clip, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzAGSJbZidQ (1:08:28) – “How our Beliefs affects our Body and Biology” by Dr. Bruce H. Lipton, published on Sep 21, 2014.
Dr John Chia is senior consultant and chief of the gynaecology oncology team at the division of medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore. For the past 10 years, he has been extremely active in clinical trial research. His passion has been to improve cancer outcomes for his patients - through research, early diagnosis and care protocols.
The letter below to Dr Chia is the outcome in a bid to clarify the state of modern medicine in matching up with the latest knowledge that Dr Lipton is revealing.
1.0.1 Letter to Dr John Chia, dated Sep 18, 2016 ( john.chia.w.k@singhealth.com.sg )
Subject Doc Talk on Sep 13, 2016
Dear Dr Chia,
I was, by chance (providence), reading your article while waiting my turn for four hours at the Eye Clinic, TTSH. I have deferred sending it until after a period of prayers and allowing my enthusiasm to cool off and be dropped.
On the inevitability of fate that our genes control our biology and hence our destiny, may I in the interest of truth and society refer you to two articles, D4 and D6, in my new website at www.discoverylifediy.com. Article D5 discusses about scientific researches on the power of prayer in healing.
I look forward to engaging with you, knowing that you will be open-minded as all researchers are in looking outside the box and to relook at the evidence to see where it is pointing. Please correct me if I have been misled by Dr. Lipton’s research findings. May the truth set me free.
1.0.1.1 Postscript Comments to D4
This postscript was prepared prior to posting the letter to Dr Chia. The four issues/ questions that could be asked are as set out in the “Postscript Comments to D4”:
1. What is the correct conventional wisdom concerning Genes and Biology?
2. Could it be possible that not all “blood-kin” are “test positive” because their belief system (and lifestyle) are more aligned with the truth and they do not allow genes to control their destiny based on the conclusion drawn by Dr Lipton in his scientific research on cells?
3. Is Prevention by intervention the best option for People withBreast and Ovarian cancer genes? (For BRCA carriers, pursuing risk-reducing surgery can fundamentally alter the genetic predestination to cancer. This is the treatment that Dr Cha recommended in holding to the wrong belief and propagating the worldview concerning an outdated conventional wisdom on genetic determinism and saying that “human destiny is sometimes in our genetic make-up and our fates are outlined in the stars now threatens to take away this very core human belief - of control over our lives.”)
4. Is there any long term study in monitoring both the people tested positive with cancer genes and their “blood-kins tested negative” to initially find out what are their differences in beliefs and in lifestyles?
The suggestion is simple: They should be informed about the work of Dr Lipton and they be allowed to decide if they are prepared to follow a heathy lifestyle based on the “Eight Health Laws” discussed in D6 – Best Health Plan in www.discoverylife.com This simple remedy (if it works) may be detrimental to the medical professionals (and resisted) but it is in the best interest of human dignity and wellbeing, body, mental and spiritual. Expensive researches are directed mainly in the pharmaceutical fields because it is lucrative. The referral to BRCA1 and BRCA2 as some of their best example and the claim that recent advent of highly powerful gene sequencing applied to cancer informs us that about 20 per cent of ovarian cancer is the result of "single gene mutations" inherited directly from one parent, with the potential to be passed down through the generations. This is a scientific fact but we need to know what the trigger is to activate the cancer genes. The research findings of Dr Lipton points to belief and researchers must be reminded to be open-minded in looking outside the box and to relook at the evidence to see where it is pointing. It is in the right belief in the truth which is the revelation of God in Scriptures (This topic is to be another discovery journey).
Dr Chia is right on the key to any conundrum being in education. We need to be taught the skill to test everything we read and to be discerning in knowing the truth from the distortion of truth. We need to practice the art of detecting bias in any writing and starting with mine. (Tsc/Sep 15, 2016)
1.0.2 Dialogue
There are two emails from Dr Chia and three by me. Dr Chia’s emails could not be published as he turned down my request in his last email.
Dr Chia’s responses (Sep 20, 18:12) to my first email are: 1. It is dangerous to overlap religion and science as they occupy two different magisteria*; 2. Science cannot explain very thing but has been an effective tool in curing tuberculosis, leprosy, and many types of cancer in the early stage; 3. No comment on my articles because they are about religion’s take on science; 4. Karl Popper and Michel Foucault on the philosophy of science are two authors suggested for reading.
(*Note: (Non-overlapping magisteria (NOMA) is the view advocated by Stephen Jay Gould (1997) that science and religion each represent different areas of inquiry, fact vs. values… Science and religion describe entirely different things; science describes what is known and religion gives answers to what cannot be known. Moreover, people with faith may argue that science is a good explanation of what things like evolution and gravity are, but religion provides the answer for why they exist… The system itself has met with some resistance and harsh criticisms from figures such as Richard Dawkins (who suggests that Gould was straining to be apologetic when he proposed it), PZ Myers, Jerry Coyne and numerous other from the new atheist movement. These critics propose that questions such as the existence of God can be tested just like any other material hypothesis and that, in principle, even things that are "outside our universe" are still within the grasp of human understanding and the scientific method.[5] - http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Non-Overlapping_Magisteria )
1.0.2.1 My Second Email (Sep 21, 2016)
Dear Dr Chia,
Thank you for the courtesy of your early reply in spite of your busy schedule. As rightly noted, my purpose is to reach out to you in case you have not heard about the research of Dr. Bruce Lipton. I have solicited your response in the quest of knowing the truth for the care of body and soul.
May I humbly request your permission to post your email on my website for the readers who would be interested and anxious to know your reply?
The topic of discussion begins with science as it is based on the talk by Dr. Lipton concerning the latest understanding on cell microbiology. He said: “Recently, results of the Human Genome Project have shattered one of Science’s fundamental core belief, the concept of genetic determinism. We have been led to believe that our genes determine the character of our lives, yet new research surprisingly reveals that it is the character of our lives that controls our genes. Rather than being victims of our heredity, we are actually masters of our genome.”- Bruce H. Lipton.
The realisable ideal in this world is in reaching a state where there is integration of God’s law (true religion and knowledge of God), evidence of science and personal experience in the revelation of God. Here is a another quote: “The conclusions which learned men have reached as the result of their scientific investigations are carefully taught and fully explained; while the impression is distinctly given that if these learned men are correct, the Bible cannot be. These philosophers would make us believe that man, the crowning work of creation, came by slow degrees from the savage state, and that farther back, he was evolved from the race of brutes (Darwinism). They are so intent upon excluding God from the sovereignty of the universe, that they demean man, and defraud him of the dignity of his origin. Nature is exalted above the God of nature; she is idolized, while her Creator is buried up and concealed from sight by science falsely so-called. {ST, March 20, 1884 par. 3- E.G. White}
The books you kindly suggested are noted to which I reciprocate with “The Great Controversy” by Ellen Gould White available online at http://www.whiteestate.org/books/gc/gc.asp. I would also share some pointers to ponder over in your leisure: Solomon’s conclusion in Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 and 1Cor 1:20,24; 3:19; Psa 33:4,6,8-11.
As I believe, our engagement is providential and for a purpose. I hope that you may try my website sometime at www.discoverylifediy.coms and get to share some thoughts about the mysteries of life on our sojourn in this world.
1.0.2.2 My Third Email (Sep 21, 2016)
Dear Dr Chia,
I understand (that our email correspondences are personal and private). I will need to acknowledge your kind and early reply. I will be posting my reply to your email though and your humble admission in the last email (that you are not knowledgeable in these topics). I am also just a lay person but desirous of knowing the Truth who is the way, the truth and the life. He is the Master Healer who will make us whole, body and soul. This is His promise.
1.0.3 Direction of Medical Research
The scenario on medical researches may be aptly gauged by this article “Unprecedented Number of Overdoses Points to Growing Public Health Emergency” by Dr Mercola, September 21, 2016 - http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2016/09/21/oxycontin-opioid-prescription-painkiller-addiction.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art2&utm_campaign=20160921Z1&et_cid=DM117473&et_rid=1675410669
The opening passages are reproduced below.
“Heroin addiction is a serious problem in the U.S. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), deaths from heroin overdoses more than quadrupled between 2000 and 2013.1 Heroin use also more than doubled in 18- to 25-year-olds between 2002 and 2011.2
Use of the opioid prescription painkiller Oxycontin has been a primary driving force behind the rising problem with heroin and prescription painkiller addiction. Although the drug company manufacturing Oxycontin claimed the medication was non-addictive, it has since gained the ruthless label as the gateway drug to heroin.3
The alarming rise in Oxycontin and heroin addiction was fuelled by misleading and false advertising to both the public and prescribing physicians.
In a financial-driven orchestrated marketing effort, Purdue Pharmaceuticals, makers of Oxycontin, unleashed a monster on American citizens, beginning in 1996 with more than 20,000 educational programs to encourage long-term use of opioids to control pain.4
This released an epidemic of colossal proportion that continues to claim lives and cost Americans billions of dollars each year in direct medical costs and lost productivity.
Pharmaceutical Company Pushing Opioid Prescriptions
Like all businesses, the manufacture and distribution of medications is driven by profit. While Purdue promised physicians their patients wouldn't get addicted to an opioid strikingly similar in chemical structure to heroin,5 they also neglected to inform them that no studies supported the use of long-term opioids for pain control.6
Opioid medications were once limited to terminally ill patients or those diagnosed with cancer. Once Purdue had the patent on time-released Oxycontin, they began a push for looser guidelines and found the journey an easy one.7
Purdue created a drug from an available compound, which they re-patented as a time-release formula, and proceeded to claim the risk of addiction was under 1 percent.”… (to read on go to Dr Mercola’s article.)
1.1 Epilogue
At stake is the ability to discern the truth from the subtle lie, to know who to believe based on the integration of knowing God’s Law with, evidence of science and our personal experience. The contention in our case is over the major decision of undergoing recommended surgery by Dr Chia, senior consultant and chief of the gynaecology oncology team at the division of medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore, with his convincing public disclosure in the national newspaper. To those of us who have seen Dr Lipton’s talk on video, “How our Beliefs affects our Body and Biology” by Dr. Bruce H. Lipton, published on Sep 21, 2014 will recall that he said: “Recently, results of the Human Genome Project have shattered one of Science’s fundamental core belief, the concept of genetic determinism. We have been led to believe that our genes determine the character of our lives, yet new research surprisingly reveals that it is the character of our lives that controls our genes. Rather than being victims of our heredity, we are actually masters of our genome.”
The bottom line concerns the decisions we make daily on how we live our live based on our belief system, acquired rightly or wrongly. We need to appreciate the gift of life. God is the source of life- Gen 2:7; Ps 36:9; Jn 4:10. Death ensued because of sin (disobedience of God’s word) and man was no longer allowed to partake of the tree of life - Gen 3:22. The Hebrew (God’s chosen race) view life holistically as in body, mind and spirit united as a whole. Life was associated with health, prosperity, vitality, etc; while disease was associated with sins and death was its final outcome. The first few chapters of Genesis clearly establish that life comes from a right relationship with God. We gain our very life from the word of God and not merely from bread- Deu 8:3; Mat 4:4; Ps 119:50; 104:29. Evil men cannot live on their sins forever- Ps 49:7-9.
As John said “the whole world itself could not contain the that should be written (about What Jesus did)- Jn 21:25. So we will only end with two episodes of Jesus work in healing the whole person in order to discern the spiritual significance of having the faith in the power of Christ to heal and restore to whosoever who believes in Jesus, the Son of God, should not perish but have everlasting life (Jn 3:15-21).
1.1.1 Man's Utter Need
Man was originally endowed with noble powers and a well-balanced mind. He was perfect in his being, and in harmony with God. His thoughts were pure, his aims holy. But through disobedience his powers were perverted, and selfishness took the place of love. His nature became so weakened through transgression that it was impossible for him, in his own strength, to resist the power of evil. He was made captive by Satan, and would have remained so forever had not God specially interposed. It was the tempter's purpose to thwart the divine plan in man's creation, and fill the earth with woe and desolation. And he points to all this evil as the result of God's work in creating man. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 1}
In his sinless state, man held joyful communion with Him in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. But after his sin he could no longer find joy in holiness, and he sought to hide from the presence of God. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 2}
It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to escape from the pit of sin in which we are sunken. Our hearts are evil, and we cannot change them. "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?--Not one." "The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Education, culture, the exercise of the will, human effort, all has their proper sphere, but here they are powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of behavior, but they cannot change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life. There must be a power working from within, a new life from above, before man can be changed from sin to holiness. That power is Christ. His grace alone can quicken the lifeless faculties of the soul, and attract it to God, to holiness. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 3}
1.1.1.1The First Advent Of Jesus
"When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, . . . to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." In Christ God has provided means for subduing every sinful trait and resisting every temptation, however strong. But many feel that they lack faith, and therefore they remain away from Christ. Let these souls; in their helpless unworthiness cast themselves upon the mercy of their compassionate Saviour. Look not to self, but to Christ. He who healed the sick and cast out demons when He walked among men is the same mighty Redeemer today. Faith comes by the Word of God. Then grasp the promise, "Him that cometh to Me, I will in nowise cast out." Cast yourself at His feet with the cry, "Lord, I believe help Thou mine unbelief. You can never perish while you do this--never. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 4}
Jesus knows the circumstances of every soul. He turns no weeping, contrite one away. He does not tell to any one all that He might reveal, but He bids every trembling soul to take courage. Freely will He pardon all who come to Him for forgiveness and restoration. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 5}
Christ might commission the angels of heaven to pour out the vials of His wrath on our world, to destroy those who are filled with hatred of God. He might wipe this dark spot from His universe. But He does not do this. He is today standing at the altar of incense, presenting before God the prayers of those who desire His help. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 6}
The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand before the great Sin-bearer, in the light proceeding from the throne of God. "Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 7}
1.1.1.2 Cleansing of The Soul
The work of Christ in cleansing the leper from his terrible disease is an illustration of His work in cleansing the soul from sin. The man who came to Jesus was "full of leprosy." Its deadly poison had permeated his whole body. The disciples sought to prevent their Master from touching him, for he who touched a leper became himself unclean. But in laying His hand upon the leper, Jesus received no defilement. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 8}
His touch imparted life-giving power. The leprosy was cleansed. Thus it is with the leprosy of sin--deep-rooted, deadly, and impossible to be cleansed by human power. "The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it, but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores." But Jesus, coming to dwell in humanity, receives no pollution. His presence has healing virtue for the sinner. Whoever will fall at His feet, saying in faith, "Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean," shall hear the answer, "I will be thou clean." {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 9}
The Saviour never passed by one soul, however sunken in sin, who was willing to receive the precious truth of heaven. To publicans and harlots His words were as the beginning of a new life. Mary Magdalene, out of whom He cast seven devils, was the last at the Saviour's tomb, and the first whom He greeted in the morning of His resurrection. It was Saul of Tarsus, one of the most determined enemies of the Gospel, who became Paul, the devoted minister of Christ. {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 10}
The dying thief, seeing in Jesus the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world, cried, "Lord, remember me when Thou comest in Thy kingdom." {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 11}
Quickly the answer came, full of love, compassion, and power: "Verily I say unto thee today, Thou shalt be with Me in Paradise." {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 12}
As Christ spoke the words of promise, the dark cloud that seemed to enshroud the cross was pierced with a bright and living light. To the penitent thief came the perfect peace of acceptance with God. Christ in His humiliation was glorified. He who in all other eyes appeared to be conquered was a conqueror. He was acknowledged as the Sin-bearer. Men might exercise power over His human body. They might pierce the holy temple with the crown of thorns. They might strip from Him His raiment, and quarrel over its division. But they could not rob Him of His power to forgive sins. In dying He bore witness to His own divinity and to the glory of the Father. His ear is not heavy that it cannot hear, neither is His arm shortened that it cannot save. It is His royal right to save unto the uttermost all who come unto God by Him. "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." {ST, October 25, 1905 par. 13}
1.1.1.3 Spiritual Aspect of Divine Healing
Every act of Christ's ministry was far-reaching in its purpose. It comprehended more than appeared in the act itself. So it is in the case of the leper. While Jesus ministered to all who came unto Him, He yearned to bless those who came not. The two episodes of Jesus work in healing the whole person illustrate the spiritual significance of having the faith in the power of Christ to heal and restore to whosoever who believes in Jesus, the Son of God, should not perish but have everlasting life (Jn 3:15-21).In sending the healed leper to the priests, He gave them a testimony calculated to disarm their prejudices. {DA 265.1}
The Pharisees had asserted that Christ's teaching was opposed to the law which God had given through Moses; but His direction to the cleansed leper to present an offering according to the law disproved this charge. It was sufficient testimony for all who were willing to be convinced. {DA 265.2}
In some instances of healing, Jesus did not at once grant the blessing sought. But in the case of leprosy, no sooner was the appeal made than it was granted. When we pray for earthly blessings, the answer to our prayer may be delayed, or God may give us something other than we ask, but not so when we ask for deliverance from sin. It is His will to cleanse us from sin, to make us His children, and to enable us to live a holy life. Christ "gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father." Galatians 1:4. And "this is the confidence that we have in Him that, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us: and if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him." 1 John 5:14, 15. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9. {DA 266.2}
In the healing of the paralytic at Capernaum, Christ again taught the same truth. It was to manifest His power to forgive sins that the miracle was performed. And the healing of the paralytic also illustrates other precious truths. It is full of hope and encouragement, and from its connection with the caviling Pharisees it has a lesson of warning as well. {DA 267.1}
1.1.1.3.1 Paralytic Man Made Whole
Like the leper, this paralytic had lost all hope of recovery. His disease was the result of a life of sin (the wrong lifestyle), and his sufferings were embittered by remorse. He had long before appealed to the Pharisees and doctors, hoping for relief from mental suffering and physical pain. But they coldly pronounced him incurable, and abandoned him to the wrath of God (for they have no faith in God’s word). The Pharisees regarded affliction as an evidence of divine displeasure, and they held themselves aloof from the sick and the needy. Yet often these very ones who exalted themselves as holy were more guilty than the sufferers they condemned. {DA 267.2}
1.1.1.3.1.1 Faith of the Helpless Paralytic
The palsied man was entirely helpless, and, seeing no prospect of aid from any quarter, he had sunk into despair. Then he heard of the wonderful works of Jesus. He was told that others as sinful and helpless as he had been healed; even lepers had been cleansed. And the friends who reported these things encouraged him to believe that he too might be cured if he could be carried to Jesus. But his hope fell when he remembered how the disease had been brought upon him. He feared that the pure Physician would not tolerate him in His presence. {DA 267.3}
Yet it was not physical restoration he desired so much as relief from the burden of sin. If he could see Jesus, and receive the assurance of forgiveness and peace with Heaven, he would be content to live or die, according to God's will. The cry of the dying man was, Oh that I might come into His presence! There was no time to lose; already his wasted flesh was showing signs of decay. He besought his friends to carry him on his bed to Jesus, and this they gladly undertook to do. But so dense was the crowd that had assembled in and about the house where the Saviour was, that it was impossible for the sick man and his friends to reach Him, or even to come within hearing of His voice. {DA 267.4}
Seeing that it is his only chance of life, and fearing that he cannot live to be taken home, his friends follow his suggestion. The roof is opened, and the sick man is let down at the very feet of Christ. The discourse is interrupted; the Saviour looks upon that mournful countenance, and sees the pleading eyes fixed upon him with a silent entreaty. He understands the case, for it was he who had led the perplexed and doubting spirit to himself. He had come to the world to give hope to the guilty and wretched. John had pointed to him as "the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world." The divine spirit of Jesus stirred the heart of this poor sinner, and while he was yet at home, had brought conviction to his conscience. He had watched the first glimmer of faith deepen into a belief that Jesus was his only helper, and had seen it grow stronger with every effort to come into his presence. {2SP 295.3}
1.1.1.3.1.2 Love and Power of Jesus
The sufferer had wealth, but it could not relieve his soul of guilt, nor remove disease from his body. But divine power attracted him to the Friend of sinners, who alone could relieve him. Jesus acknowledges the faith that is evidenced by the sick man's efforts, under such perplexing difficulties, to reach the presence of his Lord, and lifting up his voice in melodious tones, addressed him: "Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee." The burden of darkness and despair rolls from the sick man's soul; the peace of perfect love and forgiveness rests upon his spirit and shines out upon his countenance. His physical pain is gone, and his whole being is transformed before the eyes of the astonished multitude. The helpless paralytic is healed, the guilty sinner is pardoned! He has now received the evidence he so much desired. Yet not here, but at home, when he had repented of his sins and believed in the power of Jesus to make him whole, had the life-giving mercies of the Saviour first blessed his longing heart. {2SP 296.1}
The simple faith of the paralytic accepted the words of the Master as the boon of new life. He preferred no further request, he made no noisy demonstration, but remained in blissful silence too happy for words. The light of Heaven irradiated his countenance, and the people looked with awe upon the scene before them. Christ stood with a serene majesty that lifted him above the dignitaries of the synagogue and the doctors of the law. The Pharisees, the scribes, and the doctors had waited anxiously to see what disposition Jesus would make of this case. They recollected that the sufferer had appealed to them for help, and that they had entrenched themselves in the sanctity of their office and refused him one ray of encouragement. They had even expressed annoyance at being troubled with so disagreeable a matter. They had looked with horror upon his shriveled form, and said, We cannot raise one from the dead; dissolution has already commenced. {2SP 296.2}
Not satisfied with the agony thus inflicted, they had declared that he was suffering the curse of God for his sins (belief in the lie). All these things came fresh to their minds when they saw the sick man before them. They also perceived that the people, most of whom were acquainted with these facts, were watching the scene with intense interest and awe. They felt a terrible fear that their own influence would be lost, not only over the multitude present, but also over all who should hear the news of this marvellous event. {2SP 297.1}
1.1.1.3.1.2.1 The Accusation of Blasphemy
Jesus had declared that the sins of the paralytic were forgiven. The Pharisees caught at these words as blasphemy, and conceived that they could present this as a sin worthy of death. They said in their hearts, "He blasphemeth: who can forgive sins but One, even God?" Mark 2:7, R. V. {DA 269.1}
1.1.1.3.1.2.2 Evidence of Instant Healing
Oh, wondrous love of Christ, stooping to heal the guilty and the afflicted! Divinity sorrowing over and soothing the ills of suffering humanity! Oh, marvellous power thus displayed to the children of men! Who can doubt the message of salvation? Who can slight the mercies of a compassionate Redeemer? {DA 269.4}
It required nothing less than creative power to restore health to that decaying body. The same voice that spoke life to man created from the dust of the earth had spoken life to the dying paralytic. And the same power that gave life to the body had renewed the heart. He who at the creation "spake, and it was," who "commanded, and it stood fast," (Psalm 33:9), had spoken life to the soul dead in trespasses and sins. The healing of the body was an evidence of the power that had renewed the heart. Christ bade the paralytic arise and walk, "that ye may know," He said, "that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins." {DA 269.5}
The paralytic found in Christ healing for both the soul and the body. The spiritual healing was followed by physical restoration. This lesson should not be overlooked. There are today thousands suffering from physical disease, who, like the paralytic, are longing for the message, "Thy sins are forgiven." The burden of sin, with its unrest and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of their maladies. They can find no relief until they come to the Healer of the soul. The peace which He alone can give, would impart vigour to the mind, and health to the body. {DA 270.1}
Jesus came to "destroy the works of the devil." "In Him was life," and He says, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." He is "a quickening spirit." 1 John 3:8; John 1:4; 10:10; 1 Corinthians 15:45. And He still has the same life-giving power as when on earth He healed the sick, and spoke forgiveness to the sinner. He "forgiveth all thine iniquities," He "healeth all thy diseases." Psalm 103:3. {DA 270.2}
The effect produced upon the people by the healing of the paralytic was as if heaven had opened, and revealed the glories of the better world. As the man who had been cured passed through the multitude, blessing God at every step, and bearing his burden as if it were a feather's weight, the people fell back to give him room, and with awe-stricken faces gazed upon him, whispering softly among themselves, "We have seen strange things today." {DA 270.3}
1.1.1.3.1.2.3 Prejudice Discredits Evidence
The Pharisees were dumb with amazement and overwhelmed with defeat… They were disconcerted and abashed, recognizing, but not confessing, the presence of a superior being. The stronger the evidence that Jesus had power on earth to forgive sins, the more firmly they entrenched themselves in unbelief. From the home of Peter, where they had seen the paralytic restored by His word, they went away to invent new schemes for silencing the Son of God. {DA 270.4}
Physical disease, however malignant and deep-seated, was healed by the power of Christ; but the disease of the soul took a firmer hold upon those who closed their eyes against the light. Leprosy and palsy were not so terrible as bigotry and unbelief. {DA 271.1}
Had the scribes and Pharisees been honest before God, they would have yielded to the conclusive evidence they had witnessed that Jesus was the Promised One of Israel. But they were determined that nothing should convince them of this fact. They were in haughty and determined opposition to this meek and humble Teacher, who came from the workshops of Nazareth, yet by his wonderful works threatened to annihilate their dignity and station. So they yielded in no degree their hatred and malice, but went away to invent new schemes for condemning and silencing the Son of God. {2SP 299.2}
These men had received many and repeated proofs that Jesus was the promised Saviour, but none had been so convincing and unquestioned as this miracle of mercy. Yet the stronger the evidence that was presented to their minds that Jesus had power on earth to forgive sins, as well as to heal the sick, the more they armed themselves with hatred and unbelief, till God left them to the forging of chains that would bind them in hopeless darkness. There was no reserve power to reach hearts so hardened with malice and scepticism. {2SP 300.1}
Many in these days are taking the same course as the unbelieving Jews. God has given them light which they refuse to accept. His Spirit has rebuked them; but they have made his reproofs a stumbling-block in their way, over which they trip and fall. They have rejected his offered mercies, they have scorned to believe his truth, till they are left unrestrained to pursue their downward course…{2SP 300.2}
1.1.1.3.1.2.4 The Reward of Trusting In Jesus
In the home of the healed paralytic there was great rejoicing when he returned to his family, carrying with ease the couch upon which he had been slowly borne from their presence but a short time before. They gathered round with tears of joy, scarcely daring to believe their eyes. He stood before them in the full vigour of manhood. Those arms that they had seen lifeless were quick to obey his will. The flesh that had been shrunken and leaden-hued was now fresh and ruddy. He walked with a firm, free step. Joy and hope were written in every lineament of his countenance; and an expression of purity and peace had taken the place of the marks of sin and suffering. Glad thanksgiving went up from that home, and God was glorified through His Son, who had restored hope to the hopeless, and strength to the stricken one. This man and his family were ready to lay down their lives for Jesus. No doubt dimmed their faith, no unbelief marred their fealty to Him who had brought light into their darkened home.
1.1.1.3.1.2.5 Counsel on Christian Character Development
Those who are truly seeking to perfect Christian character will never indulge the thought that they are sinless. The more their minds dwell upon the character of Christ, and the nearer they approach to his divine image, the more clearly will they discern its spotless perfection, and the more deeply will they feel their own weakness and defects. Those who claim to be without sin, give evidence that they are far from holy. It is because they have no true knowledge of Christ that they can look upon themselves as reflecting his image. The greater the distance between them and their Saviour, the more righteous they appear in their own eyes. {4SP 302.1}
The sanctification set forth in the Scriptures embraces the entire being,--spirit, soul, and body. Paul prayed for the Thessalonians, that their "whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." Again he writes to believers, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God." [Romans 12:1.] The Jews were commanded to offer in sacrifice to God only such animals as were free from disease or blemish. So Christians are required to preserve all their powers in the best possible condition for the Lord's service. Says Peter, "Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." [1 Peter 2:11.] The word of God will make but a feeble impression upon those whose faculties are benumbed by any sinful gratification. The heart cannot preserve consecration to God while the animal appetites and passions are indulged at the expense of health and life. Paul writes to the Corinthians, "Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." [2 Corinthians 7:1.] And with the fruits of the Spirit--"love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness,"--he classes temperance. [Galatians 5:22, 23.] {4SP 302.2}
Notwithstanding these inspired declarations, how many professed Christians are enfeebling their powers in the pursuit of gain or the worship of fashion; how many are debasing their godlike manhood by gluttony, by wine-drinking, by forbidden pleasure. And the church, instead of rebuking, too often encourages the evil by appealing to appetite, to desire for gain, or love of pleasure, to replenish her treasury, which love for Christ is too feeble to supply. Were Jesus to enter the churches of today, and behold the feasting and unholy traffic there conducted in the name of religion, would he not drive out those desecrators, as he banished the money-changers from the temple? {4SP 303.1}
The apostle James declares that the wisdom from above is "first pure." Had he encountered those who take the precious name of Jesus upon lips defiled by tobacco, those whose breath and person are contaminated by its foul odor, and who pollute the air of heaven and force all about them to inhale the poison,--had the apostle come in contact with a practice so opposed to the purity of the gospel, would he not have denounced it as "earthly, sensual, devilish"? Slaves of tobacco, claiming the blessing of entire sanctification, talk of their hope of Heaven; but God's word plainly declares that "there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth." [Revelation 21:27.] {4SP 303.2}
"Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] He whose body is the temple of the Holy Spirit will not be enslaved by a pernicious habit. His powers belong to Christ, who has bought him with the price of blood. His property is the Lord's. How could he be guiltless in squandering this intrusted capital? Professed Christians yearly expend an immense sum upon useless and pernicious indulgences, while souls are perishing for the word of life. God is robbed in tithes and offerings, while they offer upon the altar of destroying lust more than they give to relieve the poor or for the support of the gospel. If all who profess to be followers of Christ were truly sanctified, every channel of needless expense would be turned into the Lord's treasury, and Christians would set an example of temperance, self-denial, and self-sacrifice. Then they would be the light of the world. {4SP 304.1}
The world is given up to self-indulgence. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, control the masses of the people. But Christ's followers have a holier calling. "Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." [2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.] {4SP 304.2}
1.1.1.3.1.2.6 Spiritual Growth in Relationship with Christ (Living Connection with Christ)
It is the privilege and the duty of every Christian to maintain a close union with Christ, and to have a rich experience in the things of God. Then his life will be fruitful in good works. When we read the lives of men who have been eminent for their piety, we often regard their experiences and attainments as beyond our reach. But this is not the case. Said Christ: "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit." "As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me." "He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit." [John 15:8, 4, 5.] The prophets and apostles did not perfect Christian character by a miracle. They used the means which God had placed within their reach, and all who will put forth a like effort will secure a like result. {4SP 305.1}
Paul addressed his Corinthian brethren as "them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus;" and he thanked God that in everything they were enriched by him, "in all utterance and in all knowledge," so that they came behind in no gift. [1 Corinthians 1:2, 5, 7.] In his epistle to the Colossians he set forth the glorious privileges granted to the children of God. Said the apostle: We "do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness." [Colossians 1:9-11.] Such are the fruits of Bible sanctification. {4SP 305.2}
In setting aside the claims of the law of God, the church has lost sight of the blessings of the gospel. Bible conversion and sanctification,--a radical change of heart and transformation of character,--is the great need of the churches of today. Revivals in which men become members of the church without real conviction of sin, without repentance, and without acknowledging the claims of the law of God, are a cause of weakness to the church, and an occasion of stumbling to the world. {4SP 306.1}
1.1.2 Believe in God
God has given us direction in our lives. God’s design laws of life is the standard by which discoveries in science validate and personal experience of life will attest. The most important directions in life involve getting from earth to heaven, The most important appointment in life is getting ready to meet Christ when He returns. There is no second chance. To miss an eternity with Christ is to miss life’s most important appointment. Yet multitudes have taken wrong “religious directions” (beliefs). They are helplessly lost on the road of life (with most not even realising this). Those that searched for truth on their own have come up empty. They have listened to misguided voices that misrepresented the character of God. The road they are on is the wrong road that leads to ultimate death and they cannot find peace and rest in their souls.
Answers to questions about eternal life, peace of mind in a world that is in such a mess, whether we are living at the end of human history, and how the world will end, are provided in the Bible, God’s words spoken through His Holy Spirit and inspired the prophets (40 of them over 1500 years) to write down His messages. The Bible begins in Eden, God’s perfect world, and ends in Eden, God’s perfect world restored. There is one central message throughout the Bible, Christ the Savior of humankind. The Scriptures testify or bear witness of Jesus (John 5:39). Christ first advent was the fulfilment of the promises in the Old Testament. All the fulfilled time prophecies give us the certainty of His promised second advent to make us whole with eternal life.
God's Word is a safe, reliable guide. The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible has preserved it throughout the centuries (Ps 12:6, 7; Isa 40:8). Recent archaeological and historical discoveries have further confirmed its accuracy and reliability: The Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799 in Egypt; The Moabite Stone, discovered in 1868 at Debden, Jordan; The Lachish Letters, discovered 1932-1938 24 miles north of Be Sheba in Israel; The Cyrus Cylinder records Cyrus’ overthrow of Babylon; The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in 1947, date back to 150 B.C.
Before sin entered the world God (Christ) communicated directly with Adam and Eve. Sin separated our first parents from God. Today, face-to-face fellowship with God is no longer possible. Still the heart of a loving God longs to communicate with a planet in rebellion. In the beginning there is no need for written word due to long life (and better brains) of antediluvian patriarchs (Adam 930 yrs –Noah 950 yrs). The first recorded word was needed as Israelites spent 400 yrs in Egypt under slavery and forgot the Spoken Word.
The one book that is essential for all to study is the Bible. Studied with reverence and godly fear, it is the greatest of all educators. Its pages are filled with truth. It is very important to study the Bible for yourself. We can't rely on what others tell us. God invites you to go on a personal discovery of truth from His Word. Jesus has not left us alone in our pursuit of truth. He has promised the Holy Spirit's guidance and the Spirit of truth, will guide and tell us even of things to come (John 16:13). As we study the Bible, the power of the living Christ will transform us (2 Peter 1:3, 4). We will be able to participate in divine nature and escape the corruption in the world. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (Jn 8:32).
An understanding of the Bible largely depends on a willingness to do whatever God requires. Bible study is not simply a mental exercise. It is a heart experience. If you are willing to do whatever God asks you in His Word, He will guide you to the truth. Understanding the Bible is difficult for some people because of their unwillingness to give up their own ideas. God invites us to seek His way not our own. He invites us to turn from the pride of our own understanding to humble acceptance of His revealed will in His Word. If we cling to our own ideas, our eyes will be blinded by the evil one. 2 Timothy 2:15; Acts 17:11
Millions of people throughout history testify to the explosive power of God’s Word. As they have studied its pages they have found an inner peace, a new joy, and life-changing power to overcome undesirable habits. As you continue on this fascinating journey of discovery you too will discover God’s amazing plan for your life and will experience the secrets of living life to the fullest in the twenty-first century. Lord John Acton (1870), Roman Catholic historian, saying “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” in reference to Vatican I Council, Pope Pious X, declaration of “papal infallibility”-1868. Humanity are desperately wicked (Jer 17:9) and only God can make it right and we can trust the Bible which is God’s word revealing human condition and provides us with a way to a new heart, a transformation of character through the power of the gospel. 3. Bible is historic and provides a panorama of prophecy from beginning to end to answer the question beyond tomorrow, who will make it right. 4. Basis for trust in Bible- Scripture is God’s inspired Word and preserved intact as written- internal consistency; Historicity-evidence of history; Archaeology discoveries confirm Bible stories; Prophecy- God knows the end from the beginning, made things known to His prophets- historic prophecies, prediction and fulfilment in historic context giving certainty of prophecy such as incredible predictions of Jesus first advent (Probability (just 48 outcomes) = 1x10-157); and power of a changed life when a person encounter a relationship with Christ- millions of personal testimonies. The unbelievers need to “come and see” for yourself (Jn 1: 43-51).
